Top Ten Reasons DTC Is the BEST – #3: We Know the PE Exam

800

You’re not going to find anyone out there who knows the Mechanical and Civil PE Exams better than us. Dr. Tom has been preparing mechanical engineers to take the PE Exam for decades, and before that he taught every sophomore and junior year mechanical engineering course many, many times: statics, dynamics, solids, fluids, thermal I and II, heat transfer. But passing the PE exam requires more than just understanding the fundamentals. It requires a plan of attack.

Dr. Tom’s courses are built to provide you with a solid foundation of engineering knowledge plus successful strategies and skills for passing this exam. He knows how exam problems are devised and designed to trip you up and shares his insights with you in his courses. He’s also worked with our Civil instructors to help them do the same.

The highly effective Dr. Tom Method he developed to prepare you for the pencil-and-paper PE Exam is tailor-made to meet the distinct challenges of that exam format. And Dr. Tom has developed a whole new Method for the CBT format Mechanical PE Exams, which present a whole new set of challenges.

While many of our participants tell us that what they learn in our courses helps them in their jobs, that’s not our focus. It’s not about your job. It’s about you passing the PE Exam, and everything we do is focused on that one goal.

“From my personal experience, the PE exam is not a measure of your academic or professional intuitiveness. It’s simply a test where a bunch of engineers decide to sit and make up tests based solely on their own experiences. So there’s no distinct way to prep or study for it. I thank Dr. Tom a lot because somehow he’s been able to decode this myth. My advice is to pay very close attention to every word of his – regardless of what you’ve been taught in college or at work. The goal isn’t to learn how to solve problems or help you with your profession. The goal is to pass the PE test. Unless you have limitless resources (funds and time), Dr. Tom will show you those “low hanging fruits” and those “practices he has minimum regards for.” You don’t have to waste your time with all these other Internet tutors claiming to help you pass in 30 days. They’re a waste of time and money. In Dr. Tom’s classroom, you will definitely pass the PE. I can testify to this.”
– Eche, PE, Richmond, VA

My experience with Dr. Tom’s practical focus on application of engineering principles in an undergraduate course at NC State University allowed me to make an easy choice in Mechanical Engineering PE exam preparation courses. His no-nonsense approach coupled with a wide-ranging experience and clear explanations validated my pick and was undoubtedly a key factor leading to my passing score on the Thermal/Fluids exam. With better than competitive prices, effective teaching ability, and proven results, Dr. Tom’s Classroom is undeniably the best value in Mechanical Engineering PE exam preparation, thanks Dr. Tom!” – Andrew Lipetzky, PE, Duke Energy, New Hill, NC

Megastructures Binge Watch, Anyone?

If you are looking for something new to stream while you are staying home to flatten the curve, I’d suggest the documentary series “Megastructures” by the National Geographic Channel.

Every episode that I have seen is absolutely fascinating. One of my favorites is called “Incredible Islands: Dubai,” and it is about construction of the world’s largest set of artificial islands in Dubai. The engineering challenges in this project were almost insurmountable, including sinking sand, storm waves, and water quality challenges. It’s a coastal engineering project on an almost unbelievable scale.

Other episodes describe projects ranging from London’s Olympic Stadium to the German Autobahn. If you want to be amazed by human ingenuity, look no further than this series. It is available on a number of streaming services including Disney Plus and Amazon Prime. – Beth Sciaudone, DTC Civil Water Resources & Environmental Instructor

Top Ten Reasons DTC Is the BEST – #4: Always Improving

Our online PE Exam Review courses have changed a lot from the first courses Dr. Tom offered in 2009. That’s because with every session, we have looked for ways to improve the effectiveness of our courses.

Early on we added study plans, challenge problems and assessment quizzes. When the number of participants really started to grow, we added a participant forum to allow Dr. Tom to answer participant questions in a way that made those answers available to all participants.

Dr. Tom listened to participants requests for quick reference during the exam and created his Dr. Tom’s Exam Day Companion, which many participants found to be the key to their success on the exam. It was the final piece in the puzzle that made up the Dr. Tom Method.

When the Mechanical Exam format changed in 2017 from the AM breadth/PM depth format to three separate exams, Dr. Tom and his team reworked our reviews, adding new material when needed to make sure the reviews were effective for the new exams.

In 2019, we faced our biggest challenge yet, the conversion of the Mechanical PE Exam to the CBT exam format in 2020. With this new format, no outside references are allowed, so a whole new method was needed. Dr. Tom brought his experience teaching for other CBT exams to the creation of a whole new Dr. Tom Method. Since they began in early 2019, Dr. Tom and his team have been completely remaking our Mechanical courses from the bottom up to put the new “CBT” Dr. Tom Method into practice.

Now we’re very excited to be offering those new CBT Mechanical courses to our participants. And we’ll keep listening and improving these courses, because we’re committed to making them the best PE Exam preparation out there.

2016: “Dr. Tom has done a great job establishing a curriculum focused on passing the exam. The problems, videos and study plans were vital to reinforce the concepts learned each week. The elements that I found most beneficial were the Exam Day Companion (EDC) and practice problems. The EDC was my first reference during the exam and provided the equations and concepts needed for the majority of exam day questions. I also found the Participant Forum to be a useful tool to post questions and see other students questions and concerns throughout the 20 weeks.” – Chris F, PE – Westinghouse Electric Company, Irmo, SC

2017: “Your program is absolutely spot on – even with the recent format changes to Th/FL section – you adapted the program to include compressible flow and combined cycles to perfection. Thank you for building my confidence and staying with us during the prep period. I will totally will recommend your program to my peers.” – Michael Mastice, PE

2018: “If a retired US Navy test pilot who has not looked at undergraduate engineering for over 30 years can pass using this course, then this is positive proof that the DTC method is effective. I followed the course to the letter and even built in an extra 2-weeks of review following the 20-week course. In retrospect, the only thing that I could have done differently was to trust in the review and the Dr. Tom process for test taking. I am now a believer in the DTC method.” – Steve, PE

2019: “It had been 12 years since the last time I was in a college classroom. I didn’t even remember what enthalpy or entropy was. Nearly everything in the Dr. Tom course was new to me because I had forgotten so much. If this sounds like you then have courage, you can pass the PE too! I followed the course, watched the lectures, worked the problems, did the quizzes, submitted questions on the online forums and then I passed the test.” – Evan Tinker, PE, Argus Consulting Inc., Overland Park, KS

FEATURED TESTIMONIAL – Best Schedule, Study Material and Strategies

“I have been out of college for fifteen years and I knew that without any proper schedule and enough commitment, I would not be successful on the exam. I talked to a friend of mine who is a mechanical engineer and passed the exam recently and he introduced me Dr. Tom’s Classroom. After reviewing other available material and courses, I realized that Dr. Tom’s 20-week PE Review Course was the right choice for me.

I passed the Civil Geotechnical PE exam on my first try, and I attribute this to Dr. Tom’s Classroom for providing the best schedule, study material and strategies, and also introducing a great team of instructors. I would highly recommend his classes to anyone who is planning on taking their PE exam.”

PE EXAM TIP – Work on Your Problem Recognition

One of the most important skills you need to be successful on the PE Exam is “problem recognition.” When you see a problem on the exam, you want to identify it immediately as belonging to a certain class of problems, maybe even a specific problem you’ve seen before: “This is a Statics equilibrium problem.” or “This is a Fluids Bernoulli with friction problem.” or “This is just like that Rankine Cycle problem that was on the practice exam.”

That familiarity needs to be linked with a knowledge of where and how to find the right equation to solve that problem type – either in the RHC or from memory.

As you encounter problems during your preparation for the exam, start grouping similar problems together so that you will start to see the patterns that make problems easier to recognize. Our DTC PE PE Exam Reviews are designed with this idea in mind. That is why we have grouped the equations by lesson – to help you associate certain equations with certain problem types.

If the equations are organized that way in your mind, then during the exam, you will be able to quickly bring to bear all the information associated with that class of problems. – Dr. Tom

NC State Engineers Students Creating Protective Shield Face Masks

Concerned about the safety medical workers, graduate students at North Carolina State University’s Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering machine shop are now creating protective shields for medical personnel working with Covid-19 patients in hospitals and clinics.

These specialized masks have positive pressure systems to create a seal around the doctor’s face and prevent any aerosols from coming in. It takes 10 to 15 minutes to make each mask, and right now they’re making about 80 per day. With more requests coming in and other facilities volunteering to assist, that number could go up.

More wonderful work by engineers to meet the challenge of this crisis and protect our frontline medical professionals. – Dr. Tom
