It’s a railway tunnel connecting Austria to Italy, said to be the longest in the world. I found the exploratory tunnel to be very interesting. Having been party to a handful of tunnel projects, we are often focused on keeping the tunnel as small as possible and as short as possible, due to cost of construction when compared to traditional construction methods. I suspect I would get some awkward looks if I proposed an “exploratory tunnel” at a project meeting. – Jason Savage, DTC Civil Construction Instructor
