Niobium to the Rescue!

I suspect everyone reading a recent ASME article was told, at least once when they were young, not to put an electrical device or live cord into water. This led to a corollary that you should not connect electrical wires under water. For those who work with electrical equipment, all underwater, this can be a […]

Robotic book delivery systems, also known as bookBots, are a popular technology in new libraries – they help maximize usable space in the library and can efficiently store a tremendous number of books. So Many Distractions – How to Stay Focused

In a recent ASME article caught my attention. It was titled “Mastering More Willpower” by Jean Thilmany. Her premise for the article was “By strengthening your willpower you’ll get more done and more satisfaction in work and life.” Collaborating with Roy Baumeisster, professor of psychology at Florida State University and the University of Queensland in […]

Páternoster: The Continuously Moving Elevator

Instead of carrying things up inclines or stairs, a variety of methods have been invented to move people and things vertically – an interesting example is the páternoster. The páternoster is a continuously running elevator that was first developed in the late 19th century, and there are still a number of surviving examples like this one […]

Paper a Roof to Save Cooling Energy

Northeastern University researchers have developed a new “paper” that, when applied to roofs, can dramatically reduce cooling loads. The paper is made of hydroxyapatite materials spun into fibers and made into a paper. Its white color reflects the majority of the direct rays from the sun. In addition, heat from inside the structure is radiated […]

Sports Trend – The Venue over the Game?

Sports stadiums typically started off as purely static structures, falling mostly under civil engineering. They were interesting structures, but the game being played was clearly the center of attention. However, today we have stadiums that are anything but static. Moving roofs, moving fields, moving stands, a very visible world of mechanical engineers and civil engineers […]
