Termites – Tiny HVAC Engineers

A story that started over 25 years ago got an update recently in an ASME article “What Termites Can Teach Engineers.” The story started in 1992 when Mick Pearce, an architect in Zimbabwe, was commissioned to build Eastgate Centre, a major office and shopping mall in Harare, the capital. It was to be 340,000 square feet […]

Pressurized Injection Grouting in Fine-Grained Sands

Pressurized injection grouting can be an effective way of increasing strength and decreasing permeability of loose coarse grained soils. Grouting is typically performed using a TAM (tube-a-manchette) where a small diameter pipe is inserted into the ground and grout is pumped through the pipe, which flows out of small diameter holes in the pipe. A […]

Concrete – The Most Popular Man-Made Material on Earth

I’m not surprised that concrete is the most used building material, but I was surprised to find it’s the second most used substance behind water. I don’t think I’ve ever had a construction project where we didn’t use concrete. A fascinating article talks about the past, present and future uses of concrete. – Jason Savage, DTC […]
