One of the most popular outdoor activities is kayaking. Kayaks are so personal and enjoyable to scoot around on the water. The less enjoyable part is getting them to the water. As small as they are, the size, shape and weight of kayaks make them a challenge to transport to many waterways that folks would like to kayak.

In a recent ASME article, I learned that Anton Willis, founder of Oru Kayak in Emeryville, California, has drawn on the art of origami to design a folding kayak. He got his inspiration from Robert Lang, one of the gurus in using origami in all sorts of innovative ways. A current version, called the Inlet, weighs only 20 pounds, and looks quite easy to assemble. The instructions are just one picture, replacing a 13 minute video for his original designs. I’m sure an avid kayaker has a long list of places they would like to kayak, and now more of those places are within reach. – Dr. Tom
