The 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis may not come up in many history books as a major event, but it was memorable in the annals of engineering. The event saw the introduction of hamburgers, hot dogs, and ice cream cones (OK, not Earth shattering engineering inventions to be sure). But there the X-ray machine, wireless telephones, and a little thing called air conditioning debuted to a wonderous and perspiring public.
The first public demonstration of air conditioning was in the State of Missouri Building, to which a 30 ton refrigeration plant had been added. The public marveled and enjoyed the cool air inside on a very hot Missouri summer day. This invention changed where Americans lived thereafter. Now places like Florida, Texas, and other hot states became habitable year round, and migration from out of cities in the north to the south became commonplace. Celebrate by having a hamburger or hot dog this summer in your air conditioned home! – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
