In December 2024’s edition of ASME’s Mechanical Engineering magazine is an article titled “Cutting Tradition: Desktop Waterjet.” The story was originally published by ASME in May 2024 as “Waterjet Technology Joins Digital Desktop Revolution.” The story is really interesting about the development of a desktop waterjet machine, however the story of how it and the company that manufactures it came to exist and be extremely successful is even more interesting.

In 2012, four mechanical engineering students at the University of Pennsylvania needed to make some parts as part of a school project using a waterjet device. At that time, a waterjet device was very expensive and very large. They wanted a “desktop” device. Pulling their collective creativities together, they eventually developed a prototype that got the attention of investors and from there they established the current company “Wazer.” The top of the line model is desktop size and costs one-tenth of a standard waterjet device.

What I thought was significant is that this device has received a great deal of interest by companies who cannot afford a full-size unit, and the companies that make full-size units did not come up with the design of a desktop device so needed by development teams. Four engineering students pulled together their creative energies and committed themselves to becoming successful. It will be interesting to find out what is on their plate for the future, and I hope their story is an inspiration to other engineers to make a similar impact on the world, making their dreams come true. – Dr. Tom

The Dr. Tom Method & Strategy

Dr. Tom, as he is affectionately known, teaches the course overview lessons for Civil Engineering, outlining the Dr. Tom Method and Exam Strategy on which all DTC Reviews are based. Tom originally developed the 20-Week review format for the Mechanical PE Exams, and then, with the DTC Civil Instructors, he created the Civil PE Exam Review.

Hello, I’m Tom Brown, and I based my online 20-Week Mechanical Engineering PE Exam Review on my many years of experience preparing mechanical engineers for the PE Exam. With the help of my DTC team, I developed the tried and true structure and method that we offer online today. Our Civil and Mechanical courses will provide you will a step by step path to being successful on the exam. It requires a tremendous time commitment and effort on your part, but if you follow the plan that we have laid out for you, you will have everything you need to succeed.” – Tom Tom received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1970. He earned a Masters Degree in Engineering Mechanics from Georgia Tech in 1973. Dr. Tom holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, earned at NC State. Today, Dr. Tom is the founder and driving force behind Dr. Tom’s Classroom where he pursues his passion of teaching engineers how to prepare for and pass the PE exam.
