The theme of a four-day camp being held this summer at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas is STEM. STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, is a national initiative in K-12 education to encourage more young people into career choices they would not normally consider. This particular camp is focused on transportation as the sponsor of the camp is the Kansas Department of Transportation. The participants in the camp, who attend free, are to build a solar powered model car. One of the perks of the camp is that the participants stay in dorms at Washburn University. Major goals of the camp are to help participants build confidence in their creativity, as well as develop problem solving skills. In the article is a link to a short 2 minute TV report highlighting the camp.

This is clearly a model for STEM focused camps, and most importantly – no poison ivy, which I contracted regularly at the camps I attended. – Dr. Tom
