The Icelandic company Syntholene has finished construction of a demonstration facility to produce hydrogen and then synthetic fuels, like aviation fuel, using only geothermal heat. Iceland is particularly well suited for this, lying at a hot spot between the European and North American tectonic plates.
The Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cell (SOEC) system will produce hydrogen through electrolysis, which is an important feedstock for making larger hydrocarbon fuel molecules effectively. The demonstration facility will help Syntholene to work out the bugs, so the technology can be produced on commercial scales. So, if someone tells you carbon free technology is pie in the sky, tell them sometimes the real answer is just below your feet. – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
