With the formation of tropical storm Eta, this year’s hurricane season tied 2005 for the most storms in a season at 28. In fact, because one of 2005’s storms was not named, this is the first time the name Eta has been used. Now we have hurricane Iota, making this year the benchmark in all-time storm occurrences. And we still have a couple weeks to go until hurricane season ends on November 30!

In addition, this season also holds the record for the most tropical systems to make landfall in the U.S. Eta did it twice! The extra-warm ocean temperatures that are being observed by NOAA make it even more likely that this hurricane season has more in store (tropical systems need ocean temperatures of 80 degrees or higher to form), and trends indicate future years could be similar.
