There are three technologies that are changing the designs of modern ships: solar, wind, and hydrogen. A fascinating CNET video describes a research vessel that is using all three technologies to achieve a fully self-sustaining travel. It is called the “Energy Observer.” Solar panels collect energy from the sun during the day and then it is stored in advanced storage batteries. When the wind is favorable, new “vertical wing” sails can be extended out of the hull to move the ship at speeds greater than conventional sails. However, the most advanced technology on the Energy Observer is its hydrogen production equipment, obtaining hydrogen from seawater. Working with Toyota and their experimental hydrogen powered cars, the Energy Observer is capable of cruising around the world with no need for refueling.
This is an amazing ship. Unfortunately, the COVID restrictions in many countries are causing the crew to make major changes in their original itinerary and timetable. I can guarantee you will be intrigued by this video and turn your wheels of imagination for what could be for all transportation systems. – Dr. Tom
