Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become a part of our daily lives, helping us analyze data, keep our schedules, and even writing term papers. But this computing power requires a tremendous amount of electrical power, which utilities are struggling to provide. Microsoft has decided to invoke the “nuclear option” and reactivate Unit 1 at the Three Mile Island nuclear plant in Pennsylvania. All 835 MW of electrical power will be purchased by Microsoft in a 20 year contract.
Three Mile Island is infamous because of the accident in 1979 of Unit 2, which will remain shuttered. Constellation Energy, who owns both of these units, will invest $1.6 billion getting Unit 1 operational. Microsoft is getting economical, reliable, and carbon free power for the foreseeable future. So the next time you do an internet search, it could involve power from a plant that made the news 45 years ago. – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
