A group of scientists in Australia, who by the way don’t mind being called brickheads, have developed a brick that replaces the clay with ash from trash incinerators and waste glass that cannot be recycled. Of course, this allows for the efficient disposal of ash and glass waste products without using landfills, but there are significant energy benefits as well.
Using these waste products reduces the 1,100°C (about 2,000°F) temperatures needed in the brick kilns by 20%. About 1.4 trillion bricks are produced internationally, so this has the potential to save huge amounts of natural gas used in most brick kilns. But the news gets even better because these bricks have higher insulation values and are estimated to reduce HVAC costs by 5% or more. So, a new brick that is more efficient in its making and use. Maybe being called a brickhead is not such an insult after all! – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
