Internet giant Google is working with an Italian company to develop a battery that uses carbon dioxide as a storage medium. The idea is to compress low pressure carbon dioxide gas into a high-pressure liquid. The liquid has a high density and lots of CO2 can be stored in a small vessel. Then the liquid CO2 is expanded through a turbine to generate power when needed.

Solar and wind energy will be used to operate the compressors when available. Then the stored energy will be withdrawn at night and when renewable energy is not available, making it dispatchable (available on demand). Google has a corporate drive to reduce carbon emissions and is active in developing carbon free power. This technology will make that happen.
