Standing on the beach and feeling the cooling breezes from the ocean is a great way cool off in the summer, but scientists in Saudi Arabia have come up with a new way of providing cooling using the power of saltwater. When certain salts are dissolved into water, they absorb energy and the solution becomes cooler. They found that ammonium nitrate is particularly good at this can reduce the temperature of water to 3.6°C (about 40°F) which can then be used for cooling or refrigeration. Solar energy is used to regenerate the solution, driving off the water which can be condensed and reused. The system requires little electric power to produce cooling and might be a great way to provide refrigeration in hot climates where power is not available or reliable. – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
