There were several “engineering” related topics that caught my eye last month. One was a news feed by CNN about a new material called “Superwood” that has 10 times the strength to weight ratio of steel, while also being 6 times lighter. It’s manufactured by the US company InventWood. Very interesting article that I highly recommend.
However, what not only caught my eye last month but also my heart was the news that Diane Keaton passed. I only remember her in the 1977 movie “Annie Hall” for which she received an Oscar. It became one of my favorites at the time but have probably not seen it in maybe 40 years. What could not be a coincidence is that at the end of an ASME SmartBrief a few days ago quoted her. Her quote: “This living stuff is a lot. Too much, and not enough. Half empty, and half full.” I have to admit that I got a little wet behind the eyelids.
We lose someone we have a connection with all too often. And the memories just flood in, either those made by a family member or friend one on one, or in the case of Diane Keaton scenes from a movie. And when this happens, I cannot help but remember a line about the passing of life from one of Maggie Smith’s movies, “There is no such thing as an ending, you just leave the story.” Diane has left the story, but not from whatever memories we have of her life that was a mixture of Half empty, and half full. – Dr. Tom
