Researchers at the University of Hawai’i are working on engineering microalgae – small photosynthetic organisms, to produce useful organic compounds like lipids and other long chained molecules. These can be easily converted into fuels and medicine. The key is rewriting the DNA so that the desired compounds are made in large quantities without hurting the organism’s ability to grow and thrive.
The microalgae use photosynthesis to remove car`on dioxide from the air (thus making the fuel more carbon neutral) and nutrients from the ocean or even municipal wastewater (another source of pollution). The efforts are paying off, especially in a place like Hawai’i where fuel must be shipped in and is very expensive, and there is a desire to reduce carbon emissions. These little organisms can help close the carbon loop and make paradise a little more sustainable. – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
