It’s no secret that data centers are becoming more important with the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and applications like ChatGPT. These AI platforms can use ten times the electricity of a standard internet search. All this requires lots more electricity (which is becoming another issue) and that means lots of cooling. At many data centers, cooling the equipment requires 35-40% of the total electricity purchased.

A technology that is becoming more common is to cool these data centers with liquids. Some data centers are being submerged into the ocean to provide cheap cooling, rather than using standard air conditioning cycles. A data center located off the Orkney Islands proved this, with passive cooling provided by cold ocean water. Others are using non-conductive liquids that directly contact the electronics to remove the heat. The fluid is then cooled or condensed and recirculated. So, your next web search may be handled under the sea or with submerged computers. – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
