Scientists at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh introduced a new type of pasta that looks like spaghetti as it goes into the water but comes out full of spirals. This is more than just a magician’s trick for a child’s birthday party, however. According to a Smithsonian Magazine article, the researchers say it could have significant impact on the space needed to pack and ship the pasta, reducing it by 60 to 85 percent! The tiny grooves patterned into the dough before it dries means your pasta nights may become the newest way to lower your carbon footprint. – Shannon Warchol, DTC Civil Structural Instructor
