Hong Kong Airport’s Terminal 1 is using an adaptive algorithm that predicts the building’s cooling needs over the next 24 hours. Weather – including cloud cover / solar radiation, temperature, and humidity, as well as the schedule of flights and other activities are input. The demand for the next day is estimated from the data and experience in the past. The system then decides how to operate cooling systems to best optimize performance. This could be particularly useful for facilities that have thermal storage systems or batteries to offset peak electrical demand. – Steve Terry, DTC HVAC & Refrigeration Instructor
