FEATURED FREE CIVIL VIDEO – NCEES Civil AM Practice Exam Problem 129 – Transportation: Traffic Volume

Enjoy one of the most popular videos on the DTC YouTube Channel, with over 6,200 views!

Problem 129 involves an evaluation of traffic count data in a way that is non-typical (a single day of traffic counts is used to represent a month). The key for this problem is to read and understand the problem clearly (the NCEES improved the wording of the problem through an errata). The problem is looking for a seasonal factor that can be used to multiply the Average Daily Traffic (ADT) to arrive at an estimate of the peak or seasonal daily traffic volume. Try it on your own, and then watch the video to see how you did. – Dr. Daniel Findley, DTC Civil Transportation Instructor

Green Cement

A new electrochemical process for making cement has been developed by researchers at MIT. Although the process isn’t ready to scale yet, the potential to reduce greenhouse emissions from this critical building material is immense.

Cement is currently responsible for 8% of global greenhouse gas emissions because the typical process for making Portland cement requires coal to heat a limestone, sand, and clay mixture. This new process uses an electrolyzer and carbon sequestration to substantially improve the environmental impact of cement.

Cement has been an essential part of civil engineering works as a foundational building block used in the subdisciplines of civil engineering to construct large projects, provide structural support for buildings and bridges, carry traffic volumes on roads, and countless other applications. – Daniel Findley, DTC Civil Transportation Instructor

New Trains Run on Hydrogen Fuel Cells – Only Waste Is H2O

I saw recently that a company called Alstom has created working trains that run on hydrogen and produce only water and steam emissions. Right now, the company’s trains have started a pilot program in Germany with two trains currently running. They plan to add 14 more by December 2021 and have announced expansion plans to the UK and the Netherlands. It is amazing to see the innovations that are being made to reduce environmental impacts and provide clean energy  while improving infrastructure! – Beth Sciaudone, DTC Civil Water Resources & Environmental Instructor

FEATURED TESTIMONIAL – Have Courage, You Can Pass the PE!

“I was in near disbelief to read “Exam Result: Pass.”  Six months of study and it PAID OFF!  It had been 12 years since the last time I was in a college classroom and 8 of those years were not doing engineering work. (5 years in seminary and 3 years running a small engine repair shop.) I didn’t even remember what enthalpy or entropy was. I went through the MERM but very little made sense to me. The equations didn’t make sense and rarely was there an explanation about how the equation worked or even what the units were.

Nearly everything in the Dr. Tom course was new to me because I had forgotten so much. If this sounds like you, then have courage, you can pass the PE too! I followed the course, watched the lectures, worked the problems, did the quizzes, submitted questions on the online forums and then I passed the test. Some others say they followed the course to a ‘T’…I wish I could say that, but there were many nights that I was worn out and it took everything I could muster just to stay awake to watch a lecture or do a problem, but I was persistent and kept after it week after week.

Why choose Dr. Tom over the other courses available?
1. He is clear and easy to understand. My colleagues who took other PE review courses complained that they couldn’t understand their professors.
2. Concise study plan. You will not read and understand the whole MERM and nor do you need to. The goal is to pass the test, not re-learn all of your college courses
3. Cost. Compare it to other courses out there like I did. I think you will be glad you saved several hundred dollars and got a better review course.”

PE EXAM TIP – Choose the Right Exam

Whether you’re a Civil Engineer or a Mechanical Engineer, choosing the right exam to take can make all the difference. And not all exams are created equal! Some have a wider range of topics, problems types and references that make them more difficult to prepare for and pass. Others require familiarity with fewer references and have topics the are more closely related to each other, narrowing the range of problem types, which makes them easier to prepare for and pass. Your work experience is also a vital factor in the decision, but sometimes not the deciding one.

Before you decide, I invite you to take a look at my FREE Exam Strategy Videos for the Civil PE Exam and the new Mechanical CBT PE Exam. In them I outline the factors you should consider when making your exam choice. Let’s get you off on the right foot and on your way to being a PE! – Dr. Tom
