So Many Distractions – How to Stay Focused

In a recent ASME article caught my attention. It was titled “Mastering More Willpower” by Jean Thilmany. Her premise for the article was “By strengthening your willpower you’ll get more done and more satisfaction in work and life.” Collaborating with Roy Baumeisster, professor of psychology at Florida State University and the University of Queensland in […]

Sports Trend – The Venue over the Game?

Sports stadiums typically started off as purely static structures, falling mostly under civil engineering. They were interesting structures, but the game being played was clearly the center of attention. However, today we have stadiums that are anything but static. Moving roofs, moving fields, moving stands, a very visible world of mechanical engineers and civil engineers […]

A New Frontier – Again

On May 25th, 1961, in a special message to Congress, President Kennedy gave the country, and NASA in particular, the goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the decade. While he did not live to see that goal achieved, it was in July 1969. In December 1972, Apollo 17 would […]

A Truly Kafkaesque Statue

Art and mechanics meet in Czech artist David Černý’ kinetic sculpture “The Head of Franz Kafka.” With 42 reflective, mechanized layers that rotate individually, it creates an every changing portrait of Kafka’s tortured psyche. It operates from 8AM to 9PM each hour for 15 minutes in Prague, Czechia. On a recent trip I was able to […]

3-D Printed Walls Getting a Thermal Makeover

Building construction using 3-D printing is becoming more common. The idea is to create consistent structures that can be quickly “printed” reducing costs and improving structural integrity. Much work has been done to ensure the printed walls are structurally sound, but now researchers are working on thermal efficiency now. A study has been performed on […]

Emergency Freshwater from Seawater

After making emergency medical assistance available, probably the most critical thing needed after a disaster, especially hurricanes, is water. It is normally brought into the disaster area in water bottles on pallets. To address other possibilities, the U.S. Department of Energy sponsored a three year competition called “Waves to Water” with the expressed goal of […]
