Highway 1 Collapse – Interconnected Infrastructure Failure

A recent catastrophic loss of infrastructure occurred on Highway 1 in California near Big Sur when a section of the road collapsed and slid into the ocean. This wash-out highlights the interconnectedness of civil engineering. The source of the failure has been reported as “overwhelmed drainage infrastructure, flowed across the highway, and eroded the road resulting in the complete loss […]

FEATURED TESTIMONIAL – Clear and Concise Teaching

“I purchased Dr. Tom’s Mechanical Thermal and Fluid Systems review course due to the positive feedback it had received from various engineering message boards. I was especially encouraged by the free videos accessible from Dr. Tom’s YouTube channel. As I worked through the course, I found that Dr. Tom was able to clearly and succinctly […]

Nature Inspires New Medical Applications

In a recent ASME article, “9 Bioinspired Medical Technologies,”  by technology writer Cassie Kelly highlights the ways scientists are being inspired by nature in the development of innovative medical devices. From an adhesive that greatly improves biodegradable bandages by mimicking the surface of a gecko’s feet to electric eel-inspired power sources for artificial organs, these advances […]

Celebrating the Cape Hatteras Light

On December 16, Dare County, North Carolina celebrated the “sesquicentennial” – 150th anniversary — of the lighting of the Cape Hatteras lighthouse. This iconic lighthouse was completed in 1870, and was an amazing engineering feat at the time. Long before GPS navigation, the light protected mariners from the so-called “Graveyard of the Atlantic,” the shoals […]

FEATURED TESTIMONIAL – Save Hundreds and Get a Better Course

“I followed the course, watched the lectures, worked the problems, did the quizzes, submitted questions on the online forums and then I passed the test. There were many nights that I was worn out and it took everything I could muster just to stay awake to watch a lecture or do a problem, but I was […]

Urban Flooding – A Growing Threat

The threat of urban flooding continues to grow and threaten lives, communities, and civil engineering infrastructure. Understanding the effects of urban flooding in the United States is critical to finding ways to reduce the risk associated with it.    A 2016 report published by the Center for Texas Beaches and Shores at Texas A&M University, Galveston […]

The Importance of Professional Licensure

A recent ASME Mechanical Engineering magazine contained a lead article on the importance of professional licensure, something I have always firmly endorsed. In a Q&A format, Thomas Constable, Executive Director and CEO of ASME, interviews David Soukup, Managing Director of Governance for the ASME, a PE himself. I actually met Mr. Soukup at the 2013 ASME […]

The Dr. Tom Method & Strategy

Dr. Tom, as he is affectionately known, teaches the course overview lessons for Civil Engineering, outlining the Dr. Tom Method and Exam Strategy on which all DTC Reviews are based. Tom originally developed the 20-Week review format for the Mechanical PE Exams, and then, with the DTC Civil Instructors, he created the Civil PE Exam Review.

Hello, I’m Tom Brown, and I based my online 20-Week Mechanical Engineering PE Exam Review on my many years of experience preparing mechanical engineers for the PE Exam. With the help of my DTC team, I developed the tried and true structure and method that we offer online today. Our Civil and Mechanical courses will provide you will a step by step path to being successful on the exam. It requires a tremendous time commitment and effort on your part, but if you follow the plan that we have laid out for you, you will have everything you need to succeed.” – Tom Tom received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1970. He earned a Masters Degree in Engineering Mechanics from Georgia Tech in 1973. Dr. Tom holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, earned at NC State. Today, Dr. Tom is the founder and driving force behind Dr. Tom’s Classroom where he pursues his passion of teaching engineers how to prepare for and pass the PE exam.
