Cooling from Saltwater

Standing on the beach and feeling the cooling breezes from the ocean is a great way cool off in the summer, but scientists in Saudi Arabia have come up with a new way of providing cooling using the power of saltwater. When certain salts are dissolved into water, they absorb energy and the solution becomes […]

Drones – Friend or Foe?

As humans we typically rely on facial expressions to determine the answer to this question for those we meet, even if they are just a passer-by. In texting we commonly use emojis to convey our emotions. However, very soon we will be interacting with robots or drones in all sorts of situations. How will we determine if the […]

Hidden Benefit of Traffic Congestion?

The human element is an omnipresent component of transportation engineering. No matter how a road is designed, we need to consider how drivers will react and behave. As congestion has decreased and roads have been more sparsely populated during COVID-19, some drivers have decided to excessively speed – putting their lives and others at risk.  This is perhaps […]

Will This Supersonic Jet Be the Next Air Force One?

When I was working on my BS degree in Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Tech, our senior design project was to design a supersonic business jet. It was to carry about a dozen passengers. There were 5 teams, each with a different wing configuration: straight, swept, two delta, and an ogive. Since the Concorde had a ogive wing, that […]

“Skin” Senses Cracks in Bridges

Fatigue cracks in steel members can result in sudden and catastrophic failures. Unfortunately, they’re also very difficult to see during bridge inspections. Researchers at Iowa State University College of Engineering are testing a new skin-like monitoring tool to help inspectors detect, localize, and quantify the cracks. – Shannon Warchol, DTC Civil Structural Instructor Dr. Tom’s […]

Practice Makes Perfect

Poor time management during the exam. That is the most common reason our participants say kept them from passing the exam. With the clock ticking, especially on the CBT format exam, it’s easy to get thrown off your exam-day plan, waste time on difficult problems, realize the clock is running out, and panic. But it […]

The Dr. Tom Method & Strategy

Dr. Tom, as he is affectionately known, teaches the course overview lessons for Civil Engineering, outlining the Dr. Tom Method and Exam Strategy on which all DTC Reviews are based. Tom originally developed the 20-Week review format for the Mechanical PE Exams, and then, with the DTC Civil Instructors, he created the Civil PE Exam Review.

Hello, I’m Tom Brown, and I based my online 20-Week Mechanical Engineering PE Exam Review on my many years of experience preparing mechanical engineers for the PE Exam. With the help of my DTC team, I developed the tried and true structure and method that we offer online today. Our Civil and Mechanical courses will provide you will a step by step path to being successful on the exam. It requires a tremendous time commitment and effort on your part, but if you follow the plan that we have laid out for you, you will have everything you need to succeed.” – Tom Tom received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1970. He earned a Masters Degree in Engineering Mechanics from Georgia Tech in 1973. Dr. Tom holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, earned at NC State. Today, Dr. Tom is the founder and driving force behind Dr. Tom’s Classroom where he pursues his passion of teaching engineers how to prepare for and pass the PE exam.
