The threat of urban flooding continues to grow and threaten lives, communities, and civil engineering infrastructure. Understanding the effects of urban flooding in the United States is critical to finding ways to reduce the risk associated with it.

A 2016 report published by the Center for Texas Beaches and Shores at Texas A&M University, Galveston Campus and the Center for Disaster Resilience at the University of Maryland looks at the hidden challenge of urban flooding in the United States and what can be done about it. These researchers analyzed available data on urban flooding, surveyed municipal flood and stormwater managers, and other professionals whose work is impacted by urban flooding at the local, state, and national level. It’s a good starting point for tackling this serious issue. – Daniel Findley, DC Civil Transportation Instructor
