I doubt that I have ever been really thirsty for more than an hour or so. However, UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), estimates that more than 900 million people in the world (yes, 900 million) live in areas where water is a real scarcity. And they estimate the number of people living under scarcity of water conditions will double by 2050. Double?

In a recent ASME SmartBrief article titled “Harvesting Water from the Air“, it presents the details of a hand-held device that can obtain water from the air even in desert conditions. The device is being developed at the University of California, Berkeley. It uses what is called “metal-organic framework”, or MOF’s. It is as you might expect very high tech and the article explains how the MOF’s work, including some fascinating diagrams.

I am blessed to have all the water I need, however so many people in the world are not so blessed. I wish the best for those developing this technology and that it can be deployed very soon to the great number of people in the world who are constantly thirsty. – Dr. Tom
