“I took the exam on March 18th, up to that point I had put in 10 long weeks of exam review using the Dr Tom method. I did every problem in the course, and then I went and redid every problem in the last week and a half leading up to the exam. Any problems I was unsure of I revised my brain dump list accordingly and made my notes. I was running out of time and had to work the weekend before my exam so I had to do the practice exams 1 and 2 days before the exam. Luckily I did okay on them because I was out of time…
I got to the hotel the night before, all things ready to go, reviewed my notes one last time (trying to memorize those darn vibration formulas) I knew I wasn’t gonna remember them all so I drew the line and closed my notes and tried to get some sleep. (woke up once every hour due to nerves).
I get to the test center, check in, and finally get started… how nerve racking that was, but I was finally there and it was time to go to work on this exam I’d been preparing for for months. I used the Dr Tom method and skipped the problems I was unsure of and worked the ones I knew exactly how to work. Before I knew it I got through all the problems and looked at the clock. It had only been 2.5 hours, I went back and glanced at each problem again, and worked the couple I wasn’t sure about and when I closed out of the 1st section I had used exactly 3 hours. (I was suspicious that I must have done something wrong, how could I have that much extra time).
I got into the 2nd half, and I knew I had 5 hours to complete it, I took my time on each and every problem. I double checked every number I wrote on my pad, and every number I entered into my calculator. half way through section 2, brain exhaustion started kicking in… I knew I had the time so I took an unscheduled break and drank some water, and splashed some on my face as well…
Back at it, I kept pushing through, there were a couple problems I thought I should know how to work but wasn’t getting close, I skipped those and kept moving. I carefully and thoughtfully made my way through the last 20 problems, man those were rough due to the mentally exhausted state I was in, but I kept carefully pushing forward. I finally get through the 2nd section, and it was a big relief. I looked at the clock and I had 1.5 hours left, I went back to the 2 problems I knew I should be able to solve and found my mistake from earlier, I ended the exam with an hour left on the clock.
I was very suspicious that I finished so quickly, the FE kicked my butt and I ran out of time on it, but the PE seemed much less stressful. Surely I had made terrible mistakes and overlooked so many things to have finished so quickly…
Well, one week later I got my results (after constantly clicking refresh on the page) I don’t think I’ve been more nervous in my life. But I PASSED!!! I’m so happy with the Dr Tom course and the preparation it has provided me. I fully believe I kicked the exams butt and it all has to do with this course. Thanks to all the folks at Dr Toms’s classroom. I will continue to recommend this course to all my engineering friends and coworkers.”

The Dr. Tom Method & Strategy

Dr. Tom, as he is affectionately known, teaches the course overview lessons for Civil Engineering, outlining the Dr. Tom Method and Exam Strategy on which all DTC Reviews are based. Tom originally developed the 20-Week review format for the Mechanical PE Exams, and then, with the DTC Civil Instructors, he created the Civil PE Exam Review.

Hello, I’m Tom Brown, and I based my online 20-Week Mechanical Engineering PE Exam Review on my many years of experience preparing mechanical engineers for the PE Exam. With the help of my DTC team, I developed the tried and true structure and method that we offer online today. Our Civil and Mechanical courses will provide you will a step by step path to being successful on the exam. It requires a tremendous time commitment and effort on your part, but if you follow the plan that we have laid out for you, you will have everything you need to succeed.” – Tom Tom received his Bachelor of Science in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Tech in 1970. He earned a Masters Degree in Engineering Mechanics from Georgia Tech in 1973. Dr. Tom holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, earned at NC State.
