One of the most important standards in machine design are those specified by the American Welding Society. In one symbol critical information about the required weld is provided, such as location of the weld, type of weld, and size of the weld. If there are two sides to the connection, the symbol specifies whether the weld is on both sides, or just the near side, or just the far side. The symbol also indicates whether the weld is continuous or a skip weld, and if a skip weld, the size and separation of such welds is specified. The symbol also specifies whether the weld is to be performed in the shop or in the field.
Communicating clear requirements of a weld cannot be overemphasized in achieving a successful design.
