If someone asked you “Would you like to earn more money?,” your answer would most likely be “Is this a trick question?” But there are concrete steps you can take to earn more money as a mechanical engineer.

In a recent ASME article, titled “8 Ways Engineers Can Boost Their Income,” guess what Number 1 was?

1st Way: Get a professional engineering (P.E.) license

The article says what we at Dr. Tom’s Classroom have said many times, “Having a PE after your name shows people you are serious about your profession and are likely an expert.” The article goes on to say many businesses prefer to work with a PE as being licensed “brings less risk to a project, especially regarding regulation and compliance.” And PE’s are qualified to be expert witnesses in lawsuits which can be very lucrative. The article also says that there is a shortage of PE’s, and that “being a PE can boost your salary by 10 to 15 percent.”

The article goes on to list the other 7 ways and provide guidance on how these ways can be implemented.
2nd Way: Meet performance goals
3rd Way: Publish
4th Way: Network, network, network
5th Way: Change engineering fields
6th Way: Part-time teaching
7th Way: Be a tutor
8th Way: Write and sell an e-book online

So, if your answer is, “Yes, I would like to earn more money,” then Dr. Tom’s Classroom can help you take the step that will give you the biggest boost in income, getting your PE license, by helping you pass the PE Exam. Then, when someone asks you if you would like to earn more money, the answer can be, “I already am!” – Dr. Tom
